Rice bran oil is extracted from the germ and the inner husk of rice. The process of manufacturing rice bran oil involves several stages:
Rice Bran Preparation: First, the husk of the rice grain is removed, resulting in a brown rice grain. The brown bran layer and rice germ are then removed, leaving behind a white rice grain.
Expelling: The well-prepared rice bran is put into the feeder of the expeller. A screw worm transports the rice bran forward. As the screw worm moves, the space becomes smaller and smaller, thus squeezing rice bran oil out.
Extraction: After collecting rice bran oil cake, rice bran oil extraction comes with the help of food grade solvent, usually hexane1. This process works on the principle of counter current and moving bed with variable bed height and different speed mechanism to ensure excellent penetration and percolation of solvent for absolute extraction1.
Refining: The extracted rice bran oil is then pumped into refining machinery to produce different grades of rice bran oil1. The refining process usually includes filtering, neutralization, degumming, decolorization, deodorization, and dewaxing.
Dewaxing: This is the final step where waxes are removed to prevent the oil from becoming cloudy when refrigerated.
After all these manufacturing processes, fresh rice bran oil would be ready. It’s worth noting that rice bran oil is noble for its high smoke point and mild flavor, making it suitable for high-temperature cooking methods such as stir frying and deep frying1. It’s also known for its health benefits such as lowering cholesterol, fighting diseases, enhancing the immune system, and fighting free radicals.
